STEPHEN STEWART
Home

Stephen Stewart is known best for bringing out an artists’ unique sound as opposed to imposing his own “colour” on each production. A keyboard player since his high school days, at the age of 19 Stewart became employed as an engineer alongside Sylvan Morris at the legendary Harry J’s studio. He was later employed by the late Robert Nesta Marley at Tuff Gong studios and mixed many of Marley’s local hit singles such as “Ride Natty Ride” and “Zimbabwe.” After Marley’s death, Stewart traveled to Los Angeles, California where he worked for a year at Stevie Wonder’s Wonderland studio and began experimenting with song writing.

Since returning to Jamaica, while continuing to successfully produce hits, Stewart has broadened the scope of his career beyond music production. He has managed the Tuff Gong music label, conceptualized and organized the White River Reggae Bach concert series, engineered live concerts such as Sunsplash and Sumfest and supervised the music production behind Trimedia’s “The Reggae Movie” in 1998. Returning to his roots, Stewart was pivotal in the revitalization of the Harry J’s studio in which is presently under his control. He has experimented with different genres of music such as folk/country with John Denver, Brazilian/world beat with Gilberto Gil and R&B with Caron Wheeler from the group Soul to Soul. While co-producing Toots and the Maytals latest album “True Love” Stewart worked with acclaimed artists Eric Clapton, Bonnie Raitt and Fish.
